It's been a bit of a tradition with us to hit up new place we haven't been to yet during KC Restaurant week. If you are from KC and don't partake in this amazing culinary experience... are you REALLY from KC?!? Over the last several years we've tried, Webster House (sad that it didn't make it through the pandemic), Corvino Supper Club, Story and now Silo Modern Farmhouse.
Saturday morning we were lounging at home finishing our coffee and it dawned on me that it was the last weekend of KCRW. I asked Jen if she wanted to go on a date with me that night and she side eye smiled at me and was like, sure? We haven't had our usual fun dates with the pandemic so I think she was a little surprised when I asked if she wanted to go out.
Originally I was leaning towards Italian, or maybe even a ramen bar I've been wanting to try, go figure... waiting until 11AM on the day you want to go our for restaurant week and no one has availability for that night, it was 4PM, come on, we are supper folks, yet... or 9PM, come on we aren't young pups either! So we turned it into a late lunch date and found Silo!
Nestled up next to the Stone Canyon Golf Course in Lenexa, Silo Modern Farmhouse felt exactly like that, a modern farmhouse. With a golf course clubhouse vibe when you walked in the floor to ceiling windows at the back of the dining room that overlooked snow covered greens and fairways felt surprisingly cozy. Instantly when we walked in I had an "oh shit" moment. I was wearing the EXACT. SAME. checkered button up shirt that the entire wait staff was wearing.... The irony wasn't lost on our server, or the bar tender either as they were busting my balls about clocking in and getting to work, funny guys...
We started off with a few drinks, Jen had the blood orange sangria and you could really taste the blood orange in it, it would be devastatingly dangerous in the summer on the patio! I was torn between a typical Old Fashioned or the Oak & Smoke, a table side smoked Old Fashion, after a quick nudge from the server I picked the Oak & Smoke, a smart choice.
Appetizers rolled in with a slam your face in delicious Goat and Sheep Cheese platter served with honey, dijon mustard, and a mix of salad and berries to top to toasted bread. We could have eaten a few of those and have been perfectly content! Along side the cheese platter we had a spicy pickled onion, sweet potato street taco, it too was amazing, it was served with a pepper infused oil that you couldn't get enough of on the taco.
Next up were the main courses and another round of drinks! Jen choose the fish and chips style walleye and I opted for the Silo half chicken. The walleye was prepared very well, with the breading crisp and the fish flakey and soft, it was fulfilling without being overbearing. The Silo half chicken was unique as it was offered with a fried breast, chicken salad and a grilled thigh.
Everything we had there was great, the appetizers though, were freaking amazing! Well done Silo Modern Farmhouse, you're a hidden gem out in Lenexa!
